Pittsburgh, PA has been hosting Formula One powerboat racing since 1982!
OSAGE BEACH, MO: The weekend of Aug 2-4, 2019 brings the NGK Spark Plugs Formula One Powerboat Championship’s impressive fleet of high flying race boats to Pittsburgh, PA for the 42nd EQT Three Rivers Regatta. More than twenty Formula 1 boats, reaching speeds of 120+ mph, as well as a dozen or more of the smaller Formula Lights boats, are set to tackle the waters of the formidable Allegheny River during the free EQT Three Rivers Regatta three-day festival, race number 4 of the 6-race NGK Spark Plugs F1 series.
Hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to congregate along the downtown Pittsburgh shores at Point State Park over the weekend, where festival goers will find a slew of family fun attractions, including nationally recognized bands, sand sculptures, food vendors, jet ski show, skydivers, beachfront sand play area, Kidzone, dog stunt show, and the ever-popular fireworks spectacular. A significant piece of powerboat racing history happened in Pittsburgh back in 1982, as this event became the very first race in the United States for Formula 1 race boats. At that inaugural race, British driver Roger Jenkins (1982 F1 Powerboat World Champion) won the prestigious Three Rivers Regatta Trophy, beating Italian F1 racing legend, Renato “The Maestro” Molinari.
The 2018 Regatta winner, #20 Ashton Rinker of Riverview, FL, is currently off to a wide lead in the 2019 points standings, with 885 points, after collecting 3 victories out of 3 races so far during this 6 race season. Rinker, who is the reigning 2018 NGK Spark Plugs F1 Series Champion, returns to Pittsburgh, a course known as one of the most “challenging” is a place he calls his “favorite”, and will attempt to repeat his 2018 Allegheny River victory.
On queue to challenge Rinker will be several other formidable F1 drivers who have rough water driving talents too. That list includes the two drivers who sit behind Rinker in the 2019 points chase; #62 Chris Fairchild with 796 points, and #24 Rusty Wyatt with 758 points.
Rinker feels confident he has what it takes for a back-to-back first place finish at the EQT Three Rivers Regatta. “Pittsburgh is where it started. It’s one of my favorite places to run. I’ve won multiple times and am a multi-time North American champion there. Like my dad [retired F1 series champ, Terry Rinker] says, ‘Rough water is what we like’, and I love it just as much as he does!”
The top driver to watch in the Formula Lights class is a driver who came out of retirement and is blazing the tour like he’s on fire, #6 Mark Schmerbauch of WI He won the season opener in Port Neches, TX as well as a wire-to-wire finish at the second race at Bay City, MI. But climbing up the points ladder behind him is #95 Dustin Pearson, who earned a podium finish at Bay City. #191M Jake Alkema sits third in points and continues a solid consistent pace. The Formula Lights class drivers will also be vying for the additional title of APBA F-Light (SST45) Divisional Champion here in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, Inc, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and is devoted to water safety, recreation and enhancing public usage of the rivers and waterways, including, but not limited to, the three rivers that join together at Pittsburgh; the Allegheny River, the Monongahela River and the Ohio River.
